Premium Cars in Punta Cana, Handled Properly

Most premium rentals in Punta Cana get booked twice. Once from home, weeks in advance, and once again at the airport, after the first booking turns out to be a tired crossover with 90,000 kilometers on it. This site exists so you only do it once. The airport makes this easy. It is open-air; you clear immigration under a thatched roof and can be outside within twenty minutes of the doors opening, and there is no rental car center, no shuttle to a distant lot. The agent meets you with the car, you photograph it together, the paperwork takes about ten minutes, and you drive. Delivery times track your flight rather than the booking form, so a three-hour delay out of JFK or Madrid changes nothing on your end. Late-night arrivals are normal here; the airport handles them daily and so does delivery.

The Dominican premium market is smaller and more specific than the brochures suggest. The cars that exist on this coast in rentable condition are convertible Ford Mustangs and Chevrolet Camaros, German executive saloons, a thin layer of Range Rover Sports, Cayennes, Audi Q7s and Mercedes GLEs, and Mercedes and Hyundai vans in executive trim. Premium categories carry real security deposits, and it is better to know the numbers before you land. A hold on an E-Class or 5 Series typically runs from about 750 to 1,500 US dollars on a credit card, and a Range Rover Sport or a Cayenne sits between 1,500 and 3,000. A hold is an authorization; the money stays in your account unless there is damage, and the bank releases it after the car is returned and checked, normally within one to three weeks depending on your card issuer. The roads decide more than the badge does. The Boulevard Turistico del Este is the spine of the coast, running from the airport zone up through Bavaro toward Uvero Alto, wide, paved and predictable, and the Autopista del Coral west toward La Romana and Santo Domingo is a modern toll highway; on either of them any car in the fleet is comfortable, including the convertibles. Off the Boulevard it changes fast. Access roads to some villas and beaches are unpaved, speed bumps are frequent and rarely painted, and after rain a low car earns its scrapes. We will talk you out of a Mustang if your villa sits at the end of two kilometers of gravel, because an SUV on this coast is a practical decision before it is a style decision.

Where the car earns its keep

Cap Cana is fifteen minutes from the airport, behind its own security gate; your rental enters on the resort pass arranged at booking, and inside are Marina Cap Cana, Juanillo Beach and the Punta Espada golf course. North along the coast, Bavaro holds the restaurants and the Palma Real Shopping Village, and Playa Blanca rewards a slow morning drive. With a full day in hand, the Autopista del Coral puts Casa de Campo and La Romana about an hour away, and the colonial zone of Santo Domingo roughly two and a half. Inventory at the top end of this market is thin. In high season, late December through March, the premium fleet across the entire coast is measured in dozens of cars, and the good ones go first. If your dates are fixed, book early and confirm the exact model rather than the category.
